In 2026, Top Gun celebrates 40 years, marking four decades since the aviation drama first soared into theatres in 1986. The film follows Maverick, a gifted fighter pilot, as he confronts fierce rivalries, personal loss and the challenge of proving himself at the elite Top Gun school. Its enduring legacy was reignited with Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, which continued Maverick's journey as a mentor and earned a Best Picture nomination, cementing its place in cinematic history.

Shaped like the iconic Top Gun logo, the coloured reverse displays the logo's bold design with the inscriptions '1986*2026' and '40 YEARS' and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The obverse bears the Jody Clark effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, with the wing pattern from the Top Gun logo appearing on both sides. Limited to a mintage of 2,500, the coin is presented in a presentation case.
