In 2026, Top Gun celebrates 40 years, marking four decades since the aviation drama first soared into theatres in 1986. The film follows Maverick, a gifted fighter pilot, as he confronts fierce rivalries, personal loss and the challenge of proving himself at the elite Top Gun school. Its enduring legacy was reignited with Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, which continued Maverick's journey as a mentor and earned a Best Picture nomination, cementing its place in cinematic history.

The coloured reverse portrays the iconic Top Gun logo in the centre with a fighter jet above and '40 YEARS' below, set against a blue and red cloudy sky. The design includes the inscription 'I FEEL THE NEED...THE NEED FOR SPEED' and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The obverse bears the Jody Clark effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. Limited to a mintage of 3,000, the coin is presented in a presentation case.
