Less Than $1 Each: The Easy Way to Protect Your $1 Coins

Here’s a habit I see often. A collector buys a special $1 coin, takes it out of its card to have a look, then drops it into a drawer.

A year later, it has fingerprints, light scratches and a dull patch. The coin is fine, but it’s no longer the coin they bought.

The Lighthouse Ultra Premium Round Coin Capsule 25mm fixes that. A pack of 10 costs $9.95, which works out to less than $1 per coin.

Made for the Australian $1 coin

These capsules have a 25mm inner diameter, sized for the Australian $1 coin. That matters. A capsule that’s too big lets the coin rattle around. One that’s too small won’t close.

The $1 coin is one of the most collected coins in Australia. Mintmark and privy mark releases, anniversary designs and coloured issues all use the same size. If you collect $1 coins, a 25mm capsule is the one to have on hand.

Why rimless is better

Many standard capsules have a thick plastic ring around the edge. It holds the coin well, but it hides part of the design.

The Lighthouse Ultra capsule is rimless. You get a clear view of both sides of the coin, right to the edge. It’s made from ultra-clear acrylic that resists scratching, so the capsule stays clear even with regular handling.

You can also display the coin without taking it out. That’s the main point. Every time a coin leaves its capsule, there’s a chance of a fingerprint or a drop.

Who should buy a pack

These capsules suit:

  • Collectors who take coins out of their cards and want to keep them protected
  • Anyone who collects $1 coins from change and wants to keep the best examples
  • Parents and grandparents giving a special coin to a child

That last group is worth a mention. A coin in a capsule is easy for a child to hold and look at, without the risk of damage.

A little care goes a long way

A capsule is the simplest form of protection. For more advice on keeping coins in good condition, read our guide on how to store and handle coins.
