The koala is one of Australia's most recognised native animals. Found in eucalyptus forests along the eastern coast, it is known for its calm nature, rounded ears and expressive eyes. The Perth Mint's Australian Koala series has been honouring this species in gold and silver since 1986.
This 2026 coin is struck in 99.99% pure gold using a high relief technique, which creates a three-dimensional appearance by pressing the metal more deeply into the die than standard proof coinage. The concave surfaces enhance the sense of depth and detail. The reverse portrays a koala resting in a eucalyptus tree, surrounded by leaves and branches, with the inscription 'KOALA', the coin's weight, purity and 2026 year-date, and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The obverse carries the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III and the monetary denomination.
