Australia Sovereign 2026 Gold Proof Coin
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint, producing sovereigns from Western Australian gold. Between then and 1931, over 106 million sovereigns were struck, each carrying Benedetto Pistrucci's classical St George and the dragon reverse design and The Perth Mint's distinguishing 'P' mintmark. St George, a Greek-born Roman soldier and Christian martyr, became one of the most enduring figures in medieval legend, celebrated for courage and the victory of good over evil.
This 2026 gold proof sovereign takes that famous design in a new direction. The reverse portrays a naked warrior on horseback with a sword raised above a dragon, set within a decorative circle of raised dots. The inscription 'AUSTRALIA', the 2026 year-date and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark are included, along with a privy mark bearing the number '100' to mark what would have been the 100th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a wooden presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. The obverse carries the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.
