The Butterfly 2026 2oz Silver Antiqued Coloured Coin: Nature's Most Dazzling Jewel in Pure Silver

The Butterfly 2026 2oz Silver Antiqued Coloured Coin from The Perth Mint brings one of the tropics' most striking creatures to life across two ounces of pure silver.

Here is a closer look at why this release deserves a place in your collection.

A tribute to the Ulysses butterfly

The star of this coin is the Ulysses butterfly (Papilio ulysses), one of the most recognisable insects in the southern hemisphere. Native to the tropical regions of Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Solomon Islands, it is famed for its vivid, electric-blue wings.

Microscopic scales on the wing surface reflect and refract light, producing an iridescent shimmer that shifts as the butterfly moves. With a wingspan reaching up to 14cm, it is sometimes called the blue emperor or the blue mountain swallowtail. It is a true icon of the Australian tropics.

The design

The coloured reverse features a magnificent Ulysses butterfly at its centre, accompanied by three smaller butterflies in flight. The scene is framed by native flora, including the golden blooms of goodenia and the pink blossoms of Euodia. Struck design elements add further depth, featuring the Cape York lily and the bower of beauty.

A ribbon scroll carries the inscription 'BUTTERFLY', along with the coin's weight, purity, 2026 year-date and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The reverse is the work of designer Jennifer McKenna.

The obverse carries the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.

What makes the antiqued finish special

This coin is individually antiqued. The process tones the natural lustre of the silver to convey the look and feel of an aged artefact. Because each coin is finished by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike.

The coin you receive is genuinely unique. The appearance of each coin in the mintage may vary, giving your piece its own character.
