Article: The Australian Citizenship coin

The Australian Citizenship coin
Around 140,000 people become Australian citizens each year. The moment gets a ceremony and a certificate. Sometimes a gift. The Australian Citizenship coin from the Perth Mint is one of the few options made specifically for that occasion.
Mint Coin Shop stocks the 2024, 2025 and 2026 editions, all under $18.
What the coin is
It's a $1 base metal coin, brilliant uncirculated finish, 30.7mm diameter, in a presentation card ready to give. The Perth Mint produces it for citizenship occasions rather than general circulation — it's not something you'll find in everyday change.
The reverse carries the Commonwealth Coat of Arms: six state badges on a shield framed by an ermine border, the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star above, and the kangaroo and emu as supporters. Inscriptions read AUSTRALIAN and CITIZENSHIP, with the year and Perth Mint's P mintmark. The obverse has the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne.
It's not a precious metal coin. The $16.50 buys the occasion, not the material.
Which year to buy
The 2024 and 2025 editions are in stock at $16.50 each. The 2026 is $17.50, currently sold out, with restock expected in May 2026. Orders placed now will ship when stock arrives.
If the person became a citizen in a specific year, get that year. For an upcoming ceremony, the 2025 is the practical choice.
Who it suits
New Australians at their citizenship ceremony. Friends or family who want to give something that fits the day. People marking a citizenship anniversary — there are almost no gifts made specifically for that, which is part of why this one gets used for it.
At $16.50, it sits comfortably alongside a card or a bottle of wine rather than as the whole gesture.
