Design and Artistry
The reverse of the coin features an intricate design by Jennifer McKenna. It captures the vast biodiversity of the Australian outback. At the centre of the coin is a round, genuine Australian opal. Surrounding this gemstone are several native species and natural elements.
The design includes a sun with beaming rays at the top. Moving clockwise, you can identify a dingo, a python, and a wolf spider. The detail continues with a bilby, two spinifex pigeons, and a perentie. Further down the circle are two echidnas, a blue-tongued skink, two desert tree frogs, a rock wallaby, and two emus.
These animals are set against a backdrop of rock formations characteristic of the arid interior. The Perth Mint ‘P’ mintmark is also present on the reverse along with the coin's weight, purity, and the 2026 year-date.
Technical Specifications
The coin is struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver. It features a proof finish, which provides a mirror-like background that highlights the detailed engraving. The coin has a diameter of 36.60mm and a maximum thickness of 3.95mm.
As a legal tender issue under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the obverse bears the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The monetary denomination is one Australian dollar.
Rarity and Presentation
The Perth Mint has set a maximum mintage of 5,000 for this release. This limited production makes it a notable choice for collectors of Australian opal coins. Each coin is housed in a classic display case with a clear lid, allowing the coin to be viewed without removing it from its housing. It also comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity and is delivered in a themed shipper.
The Australian opal is the national gemstone and is often referred to as the 'fire of the desert'. Its inclusion in this series provides a tactile link to the land the coin depicts.
Availability
Due to the expected demand for this series, there is a strict limit of two coins per customer. We recommend interested collectors act promptly to secure this release for their collection. Orders are processed manually to ensure fair distribution among our clients.
