Commemorating a Legacy: The 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget

In 1986, The Perth Mint introduced the Australian Nugget, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's numismatic history. This was the first official legal tender gold bullion coin program produced by the mint since sovereign production ceased in 1931. To celebrate four decades of this significant series, a new 1oz silver proof gilded coin has been released for 2026.

It's out now at www.mintcoinshop.com.au.

The Original Vision of Stuart Devlin

The 40th-anniversary release pays tribute to the work of the late Stuart Devlin, a world-renowned Australian goldsmith and designer. Devlin was commissioned to create the original imagery for the series, which initially focused on famous natural gold nuggets found across the Australian continent.

The reverse of this 2026 coin features a design from the archives that was completed for the original program but remained unreleased until now. It centres on the 'Welcome Stranger', which is recognised as the largest alluvial gold nugget ever discovered. Unearthed in 1869 by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates at Moliagul, Victoria, the nugget was so substantial it had to be broken into three pieces before it could be weighed.

Detailed Artistry and Gilding

This commemorative coin is struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver and features selective 24-carat gold gilding. The gold treatment is applied to the representation of the Welcome Stranger nugget and the outer rim of the coin. This contrast between the silver background and the gold highlights creates a visually striking tribute to the original gold series.

The central image of the nugget is set against a line drawing of the Australian continent and is encircled by stylised sun rays. The design also incorporates a special anniversary mintmark, 'P40', to signify the 40-year milestone. Other inscriptions include the name of the nugget, 'THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET', and the coin's weight, purity, and the 2026 year-date.

Technical Excellence and Presentation

As an Australian legal tender issue, the obverse bears the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The coin has a diameter of 40.90mm and a thickness of 3.50mm, providing a large surface area to appreciate the intricate archival design.

The Perth Mint has limited the mintage of this silver proof gilded coin to 5,000 pieces. Each coin is presented in a classic black display case with a clear lid, allowing for secure exhibition. It is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity and a themed outer shipper.

A Collector’s Milestone

The Australian Nugget series eventually transitioned to the Australian Kangaroo theme in 1989, making this 40th-anniversary return to the 'nugget' roots a significant event for long-term collectors. It offers an opportunity to own a piece of Australian minting history that bridges the gap between the initial 1986 launch and the modern era.

Given the historical importance of the program and the limited production run, this anniversary coin is expected to be a popular addition to many collections.
