Five $1 Coins, One Folder and a $2 Till Coin Included: The Bright Ideas Set Explained

The 2026 Bright Ideas $1 Uncirculated Collection Folder and Five-Coin Set is built for completing. Five coins. Five inventions. One folder to hold them all.

It is priced at $37 at Mint Coin Shop. That includes something extra.

The set

The set contains five $1 coins in a coin tube, plus a collection folder. Each coin features a single Australian invention:

• The stump jump plough, patented by Richard Smith in 1876.
• The black box flight recorder, invented by Dr David Warren in 1953.
• The jaffle maker, first created by Dr Ernest Smithers in 1949 and reworked by Breville in 1974.
• The Safe-n-Sound Baby Safety Capsule, from Bill Bowtell, Bob Heath and Colin Nagel.
• High-speed WLAN technology, developed by CSIRO in the 1990s.

One coin per invention gives each design space. It also makes the set easy to explain. Pull out a coin, tell the story behind it, then slot it into the folder.

The till coin, already in the folder

The folder has a space for the $2 Bright Ideas till coin. Mint Coin Shop places that coin inside the folder with every set it sells. Collectors do not need to hunt through change to finish the display.

For larger orders, the $2 coins may arrive in a press seal coin bag instead.

The 1-in-10 surprise

There is a 1-in-10 chance that the black box flight recorder coin in a set is a coloured edition. There is no way to know in advance. It adds a small element of luck to opening each tube.
