Bright Ideas $2 Proof Coin: The Collector's Edition, Limited to 10,000
The 2026 Bright Ideas program has a coin for every budget. For collectors who want the best finish, the $2 proof coin is the one to own.
It carries the same design as the uncirculated version. The difference is in how it is made and how many exist.
Why proof matters
Proof coins are struck with specially polished dies, usually more than once. The result is a mirror-like background with crisp, raised detail. Small elements that look flat on a circulating coin stand out clearly on a proof.
That suits this design. The reverse packs five inventions around a central lightbulb, with Australia inside the bulb. A proof finish gives each invention room to be seen.
The five inventions
- The stump jump plough, patented by Richard Smith in 1876.
- The black box flight recorder, invented by Dr David Warren in 1953.
- The jaffle maker, first created by Dr Ernest Smithers in 1949 and reimagined by Breville in 1974.
- The Safe-n-Sound Baby Safety Capsule, from Bill Bowtell, Bob Heath and Colin Nagel.
- High-speed WLAN technology, developed by CSIRO in the 1990s.
The words "Australian Inventions" sit on the reverse. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.
The numbers
- Metal: aluminium bronze
- Denomination: $2
- Weight: 6.60g
- Diameter: 20.50mm
- Finish: proof
- Maximum mintage: 10,000
- Price: $65
The uncirculated coin has no mintage cap. The proof is capped at 10,000. For a program celebrating Australian ingenuity, that is a small number. Collectors who want the premium version should not leave it too late.
Handling a proof coin
A proof finish marks easily. Fingerprints and fine scratches show up on the mirrored surface. Keep the coin in its capsule and case. If it must come out, hold it by the edges with cotton gloves.
Who it suits
This coin suits serious collectors, people who already own the uncirculated version and anyone after a quality gift with a strong Australian story. It also pairs well with the $1 and $2 Privy Mark Seven-Coin Collection for a complete display.
Buying from Mint Coin Shop
Mint Coin Shop is an official Royal Australian Mint stockist and sells at the recommended retail price. The limit is 10 per customer, address or household. Orders are checked manually, and most ship the same day.
