Bon Scott 80th Birthday 1g Gold Minted Bar – The Perth Mint Marks a Rock Milestone
Bon Scott fronted AC/DC from 1974 until his death in 1980. Born in Scotland, raised in Australia, and still one of the most recognisable voices in rock music anywhere in the world. 2026 marks what would have been his 80th birthday.
The Perth Mint has marked it with a 1g minted bar in 99.99% gold. It is small, at a maximum 15.60 × 9.10mm and 1.30mm thick, which makes it the kind of piece that surprises people when they first hold it. Gold content is 0.032 troy ounces.
The design carries the Bon Scott logo and crest, with a lion rampant holding a microphone. The inscription reads BON SCOTT 80 YEARS, alongside The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The back of the bar is stamped with The Perth Mint's London Bullion Market Association registered mark, together with its weight and fineness. The reverse designer is Lucas Bowers, and the item code is 26Z37AAD.
Presentation is where this one earns its place. The bar is housed in a paper card featuring Bon Scott's touring tartan and the 80th Anniversary logo. That sits inside a paper sleeve carrying a photograph of Bon Scott and his signature. It reads more like a piece of music memorabilia than a bullion product, which is the right call for the subject.
Maximum mintage is 5,000. Released under licence to Perryscope Productions, LLC.
There are two audiences here and they rarely overlap. Music collectors want the tartan, the signature and the milestone. Precious metal collectors want a small, sensibly priced piece of 99.99% gold from a mint they trust. This release manages to satisfy both without compromising either.
It is $330 at Mint Coin Shop, at recommended retail.
Australian music milestones do not come around often in gold. AC/DC releases tend to move steadily rather than in a rush, then quietly disappear. If Bon Scott means something to you, or to someone you are buying for, this is a straightforward decision.
