Australia's outback is one of the world's great natural treasures — 7.68 million square kilometres of deep canyons, arid desert, lush rainforests, and stunning coastlines, home to between 600,000 and 700,000 wildlife species, many found nowhere else on earth.

Jennifer McKenna's reverse design pays tribute to that remarkable biodiversity. Arranged clockwise from the top are a sun with beaming rays, a dingo, a python, a wolf spider, a bilby, two spinifex pigeons, a perentie, two echidnas, a blue tongued skink, two desert tree frogs, a rock wallaby, and two emus — all surrounding a genuine round opal insert. Diverse fauna and rock formations fill the remaining detail, alongside The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark and the coin's weight, purity, and 2026 year-date.

The opal at the heart of the design carries its own story. Known as Australia's national gemstone, opal holds deep significance in ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime — said to have been created when a rainbow touched the earth, and known to Indigenous people as the 'fire of the desert'. Australia produces most of the world's precious opal today.
