Struck from 99.99% pure silver, this historic release pays tribute to the Spanish Pillar Dollar, one of the world’s most famous trade coins and a vital influence in Australia’s early monetary history.

Historical Significance

In 1800, Governor King declared a list of foreign coins as legal tender in New South Wales, including the Spanish real (Pillar Dollar). To combat shortages, Governor Macquarie later imported 40,000 Spanish reales and transformed them into the ‘holey dollar’ and ‘dump’, creating the first currency minted in Australia.

Coin Design

• Reverse: A faithful homage to the Spanish Pillar Dollar, featuring the Spanish Crown and hemispheres symbolising the Old and New Worlds, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules wrapped in banners inscribed ‘PLVS VLTRA’ (more beyond). Includes the inscription ‘VTRAQUE’, a unique ‘Mo’ mintmark referencing Mexico City, and the 2025 year-date.
