Top Gun Turns 40: Celebrate With 1g of Pure Gold From The Perth Mint
Top Gun hit cinemas in 1986. Forty years later, it still has a firm hold on fans. The Perth Mint is marking the anniversary with a 1g gold rectangular coin.
It is priced at $330 at Mint Coin Shop.
The film
Top Gun follows Maverick, a talented fighter pilot at the elite Top Gun school. He deals with rivalries, loss and the pressure to prove himself. The story returned in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick. That sequel earned a Best Picture nomination and introduced the story to a new generation.
The coin
The coin is rectangular rather than round. That shape is unusual and suits the subject. The reverse shows the Top Gun logo in the centre with "40 YEARS" beneath, set against a cloudy sky. Lucas Bowers designed the reverse.
The obverse carries the Jody Clark effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.
It comes in a paper card inside a sleeve featuring the official Top Gun logo.

Small coin, real gold
At 1g, this is not a large coin. It is real gold, though, at 99.99% purity. That makes it an accessible way to own a gold collectible from The Perth Mint. The mintage of 5,000 is modest for a title with such a large global audience.
Who it suits
This coin suits fans who saw Top Gun in 1986 and those who discovered it through Maverick. It also suits aviation enthusiasts, pilots and anyone with a connection to the Air Force or Navy. As a gift, the card and sleeve present well without extra packaging.
