The Australian Kookaburra 2026 5oz Silver Incused Coin: A Familiar Bird, Struck Differently

The kookaburra has been a fixture on Australian silver coins for decades, and collectors know the series well. That's why this release caught our eye. It takes a familiar subject and presents it in a way most collectors rarely see.

The Australian Kookaburra 2026 5oz Silver Incused Coin from The Perth Mint has a maximum mintage of 500.

What is an incused coin?

On most coins the design is raised above the surface. That's called relief.

An incused coin does the opposite. The parts of the design that would normally stand up are pressed down into the coin instead. The result looks almost carved, and it catches the light in a different way.

Incused strikes are uncommon. On a 5oz coin, the effect has plenty of room to work.

The design

The reverse shows a kookaburra in flight over a river, with trees and rocks around it. It includes the inscription KOOKABURRA and The Perth Mint's P mintmark.

Kookaburra designs often show the bird perched. This one has it on the move, and the incused strike gives the trees and rocks real depth.

The reverse was designed by Wade Robinson and the obverse by Dan Thorne.

Why collectors like the kookaburra

The kookaburra is one of Australia's largest kingfishers. It's known for its laughing call, brown and white plumage, hunting skill and close family groups. You'll hear that call everywhere from the outback to suburban backyards.

Few birds are more closely tied to Australia, which goes a long way to explaining why kookaburra coins have such a following here and overseas.

A substantial coin

At 5 troy ounces of 99.99% pure silver, this coin has real heft. It measures 50.90mm across and 11.85mm thick. That thickness suits an incused design, giving the recessed elements room to sit within the coin.

Who will enjoy it

It's a natural fit for kookaburra collectors wanting something different for their series, and for anyone interested in unusual minting techniques. It also suits collectors after a substantial, low-mintage Australian silver piece, or a gift with a strong Australian theme.

Just 500 coins

A maximum mintage of 500 is small, especially for a design with such a broad following. Once these are sold, there won't be more.

The Australian Kookaburra 2026 5oz Silver Incused Coin is available now at Mint Coin Shop.
