Six kangaroos: the Kangaroo Series 2026 $1 1oz Fine Silver Coin

Stuart Devlin's kangaroos have been in Australian pockets since 1984. Five of them, mid-hop, on the one-dollar coin that replaced the one-dollar note.

The Kangaroo Series 2026 $1 1oz Fine Silver Frosted Uncirculated Coin is the Royal Australian Mint's "Mob of Six", released to mark sixty years of Australian decimal currency. The extra kangaroo stands for the sixth decade. It is a small change to a design most of us grew up with, and it works.

Devlin's original still holds up. The animals are caught somewhere between stillness and motion, which is exactly how kangaroos look in a paddock at dusk. The mint has kept that feeling intact rather than reworking the design around the addition.

The coin is struck in 99.9% fine silver, one troy ounce, at 31.103g gross weight and 40.00mm across. The finish is frosted uncirculated, with highly polished imagery lifting against a frosted background. It photographs beautifully and holds its detail in hand.

Maximum mintage is 10,000. The obverse is by Daniel Thorne. It arrives with a themed card in a compact presentation slab. Item code 11900. Denomination is one dollar.

Two kinds of buyer will want this one.

Series collectors already know the value of continuity. The Kangaroo Series has run for decades, and anniversary editions are the ones that fill the gaps in an album later. A mintage of 10,000 is not large.

Then there is the buyer who wants an ounce of silver with something to say. Generic bullion does the job, but it tells no story. This coin does both. Sixty years of decimal currency is a real milestone, and the design carries it lightly.

It also makes a straightforward gift. Anyone who remembers the arrival of the one-dollar coin will understand the reference without needing it explained.
