Remembering the Forgotten War: The 2026 Battle of Kapyong 50c Coin

The Korean War is often called the "forgotten war", but the legacy of those who served remains etched in our national history. In April 1951, one of the most significant actions involving Australian troops took place in the steep, rugged hills of the Kapyong Valley. To mark the 75th anniversary of this pivotal engagement, the Royal Australian Mint has released a commemorative 2026 50c Uncirculated Coin in Card.

Show for this now at www.mintcoinshop.com.au.

A Legacy of Bravery

The Battle of Kapyong was a defining moment for the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). Alongside Canadian, British, and New Zealand forces, the Australians faced a massive offensive. Despite being heavily outnumbered, they held their ground against advancing forces, successfully defending the route to Seoul. This resolute stand earned the unit the United States Presidential Unit Citation, a rare and prestigious honour.

Symbolic Design by Bronwyn Scott

The reverse of this 50c coin features a deeply moving design by Mint artist Bronwyn Scott. It combines military history with traditional Korean aesthetics. The lower half of the coin displays a delicate lattice pattern inspired by munsal, the decorative wooden frames found in traditional Korean architecture.

Woven into this lattice are 32 poppies. Each flower represents one of the 32 Australian soldiers who lost their lives during the battle. This floral tribute serves as a quiet, enduring reminder of their sacrifice. Above the lattice, the design depicts the rugged terrain of the Kapyong Valley, with soldiers positioned on Hill 504. The inclusion of the battle’s geographical coordinates further anchors this piece to the landscape where history was made.

Specifications for Collectors

This release is more than a historical tribute; it is a key addition for any serious decimal currency collector. Because this coin is a "non-circulating" type, you will not find it in your daily change.

  • Mintage: Limited to 40,000 coins worldwide.
  • Finish: Uncirculated cupro-nickel.
  • Packaging: Housed in a themed presentation card featuring archival images from the Australian War Memorial.
  • Obverse: Features the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.

Secure Your Piece of History

With a mintage of only 40,000, this coin is already highly sought after by military historians and coin enthusiasts alike. It offers a tangible way to honour the "Old Faithful" 3RAR and ensure the stories of Kapyong are never truly forgotten.

You can find the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong 2026 50c Uncirculated Coin right here at Mint Coin Shop. Given the strict limits and high demand for Royal Australian Mint commemoratives, we recommend acting quickly to add this poignant piece to your collection.
