R2-D2 arrives in a blind box, and one box in a hundred holds g

Blind boxes have been part of collecting culture for years through designer toys and trading cards. The New Zealand Mint has brought the format to precious metals, and this release lands with the most recognisable droid in the galaxy on the front.

The Star Wars R2-D2 5g Foil Blind Box works like this. Every box holds a 5 gram, 999 fine, officially licensed legal tender foil featuring R2-D2. What you do not know until you open it is which of four tiers is inside.

Three tiers are silver. Full Colour is the most common at 3,000 pieces. Alternative Full Colour runs to 1,500. Fully Engraved Silver is limited to 450. Then there is the chase: Fully Engraved Gold, struck in 999 pure gold, limited to 50 pieces worldwide.

The total run is 5,000 boxes, and every foil is individually numbered within its tier. Do the arithmetic and one box in every hundred holds gold. The engraved silver comes in at about one in eleven. Those are honest odds for a chase format, and better than plenty of blind box products where the rare pull is closer to myth than mathematics.

The foil itself is a substantial piece at 70 x 110 mm, or 74 x 114 mm in its protective laminate. Each is legal tender issued by Niue, $1 for the silver tiers and $50 for the gold, with the Public Seal of Niue Coat of Arms on the reverse. It is a 2026 issue.

A word for collectors who like certainty: if you only ever buy what you can see, the blind box format is not for you, and there is no shame in that. But if the moment of opening is part of the fun, this is that moment with actual precious metal inside.
